Mortlach was founded in 1823 and is known as the first legal distillery in Dufftown. It is highly regarded for its unusually complex distillation regime and its weighty, muscular character. At the same time, Mortlach spent much of its history as a major contributor to blends, and official single malt releases remained exceptionally rare for many years. The official brand history states that Mortlach was first released as a single malt in 1992 as part of the Flora & Fauna collection.

This 12-year-old bottling is regarded as a rare old official release from the 1980s, and it is often described in the market as a Japan-oriented bottling. Tasting descriptions for this bottle frequently mention dried fruits, leather, tobacco, and spice, giving it the character of an old-style Mortlach with a rich sherried impression. As a pre-revival official bottling, it remains a particularly fascinating expression for collectors and drinkers interested in Mortlach’s earlier history.
